SAIF Educational / Independents' Day
October 5th, 2010

SAIF's Educational / Independents day was held at the Barcelo Hinckley Hotel, Hinkley Leics on Sunday 3 October 2010.

The days agenda was started with an introduction from SAIF's very own president Jim Parker who initially thanked all those who were present. He then introduced SAIF's new CEO Peter O'Neill. Peter explained his key objectives in the up and coming years. The main one to protect the Independents position in the market place and to strength it further.

This was followed by a talk from the Reverend George Callander, from 'The Society of Bereavement Practitioners'. Trying to keep funeral standards high.

After a refreshment break the day continued with a talk and open forum with representatives from the DWP (The Department of Work and Pensions). Many questions were asked and it became apparent that many Funeral Directors in the room where fustrated at the whole system. This was also made apparent by the representatives fustrations at the way they had to work. A mutual concern was noted. Last year alone there were 70,000 applications and £46million paid out in help towards funeral costs.

After a Special SAIF General Meeting it was down to business with Dr Bill Webster.

Dr Bill Webster is someone who knows about grief, not just in theory, but from a very difficult personal experience.

The workshop 'Bereavement Training Skills for the Funeral Director' was met with great enthusiasm and a great time was had by all. The key point was the approach of the Independent Funeral Director towards the ongoing support for the bereaved and the after care they can offer.

As well as being attended by Funeral Directors and their representatives the day had a number of SAIF associate companies and these included Colourful Coffins, JC Atkinson, Golden Charter and Daisy Coffins to name but a few.Well Done to Linda (SAIF) and all who made the event a successful one.
